Knee Replacement in India

Joint replacement is a process of replacing damaged or arthritis joint with an artificial joint called prosthesis. Joint replacement surgery can be performed on various parts of the body such as knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle, foot, and fingers.

Knee Replacement
Replacement of damaged bones and cartilage with an artificial joint  is Knee replacement.Through knee replacement the ability of a natural knee to roll and glide as it bends is retained. It will reduce the pain. The replaced artificial joint can be of metal alloys, high-grade plastics and polymers and the design depends on the patient's  age, weight, activity level and overall physical health.

There are two types of knee replacement: Total knee replacement, half or partial knee replacement.
Total knee Replacement
In total knee replacement the both sides of knee is replaced.
Procedure
  • Initially a cut is made on the front of the knee.
  • Then the damaged ends of thigh bone and shin bone is carefully removed and a dummy joint is placed to know the functionality. After the adjustments are made and then the artificial joint is fixed.
  • Femur end is replaced with a curved metal piece and the end of shin bone is replaced with flat metal piece and this is fixed with a cement. In between the metal pieces a plastic spacer is placed.
  • The cut is stitched with stitches and clips.

Half or Partial knee Replacement
Here only one side of the knee is replaced. Only small incision is made to remove and replace  the small part of the bone. Only shorter time is required for the recovery. It results in better knee movement, much like the natural knee.
